Good Art #21. Ecce Homo.

Cecilia Giminez's shocking restoration of a 19th century fresco depicting Jesus has been on my mind ever since I first saw it in 2012. It's hilarious, there's no doubting that, and it's popular; people love it. So much so that as tourists flocked to see it, authorities began charging an admission fee and hired a security guard. If nothing else, it brings a smile to your face and has a lasting impression. It's all in the eyes.

Glossy. Tare Lugnt.

Here's a magazine cover with a difference. It's single issue Tare Lugnt as a tattoo. Now that's original, and as someone without tattoos, sexy to boot.

Good Art #20. Policewoman.

One of the best exhibitions I saw in 2012 was Outsider Art From Japan at Haarlem's Het Dolhuys. With 46 artists showing work, the galleries in Het Dolhuys were a maze of emotion, humour, sombre mood and jubilation. Intricate and time-consuming drawings, sculptures, paintings and more charmed with their inventive use of discarded materials and unique takes on the world. It was evident that subject matter absorbed many of the artists, a case in point being Takako Shibata's entralling drawings of policewomen. This work, and the show in general, continues to haunt me six months on.

Glossy. Happy Birthday Harper's.

It's fifteen years ago since Harper's Bazaar relaunched in Australia, and to mark the occasion they've created fifteen covers each designed by a special guest. I've only seen this one, and was surprised to learn it's by Victoria Beckham — I'm no fan — but I love this cover. Happy birthday.

Good Art #19. Missing Time Color Exercise.

A whopping Mike Kelley retrospective is currently showing at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. It's an astounding showcase of a wide variety of works from Kelley's career spanning painting, drawing, prints, sculpture, installation and more. Missing Time Colour Exercise (Reversed) No. 2 from 2002 is a work I've not seen before, but one that kept me staring at the walls and so a perfect Good Art.

Mike Kelly's collection of Sex To Sexty magazine is the focus of this work. His covers are displayed chronologically with painted panels representing missing issues — the covers themselves featuring bawdy depictions of hillybilly-like characters in amusing poses and situations. While it's easy to be distracted by the sexually charged puns and drop-jaw humour, the work is more complex and said to be a parody of colour assignments common in art schools. There's also a nod to colour field painting and the use of the archive as a rich source of inspiration for artists. I loved this work. It's clever, funny and cheeky. Incidently, Kelly edited a book of the Sex to Sexty published by Taschen.
