One of the best exhibitions I saw in 2012 was Outsider Art From Japan at Haarlem's
Het Dolhuys. With 46 artists showing work, the galleries in Het Dolhuys were a maze of emotion, humour, sombre mood and jubilation. Intricate and time-consuming drawings, sculptures, paintings and more charmed with their inventive use of discarded materials and unique takes on the world. It was evident that subject matter absorbed many of the artists, a case in point being Takako Shibata's entralling drawings of policewomen. This work, and the show in general, continues to haunt me six months on.
